Gurudongmar Lake

North Sikkim Tour : Gurudongmar Lake

At Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world and in India, at an elevation of 5,430 m (17,800 ft) according to the Government of Sikkim. It is located in the Great Himalayas in the Mangan District in Indian state of Sikkim, and considered sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus. The lake is named after Guru Padmasambhava—also known as Guru Rinpoche—founder of Tibetan Buddhism, who visited in the 8th century.

Partly Frozen Gurudongmar Lake

The high altitude lake is located 190 kilometres (120 mi) away from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, and about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of the Tibetan (Chinese) border, in the district of North Sikkim.

The lake can be reached by road from Lachen via Thangu Valley. The road from Thangu to Gurudongmar passes through rugged terrain with moraine, which has high alpine pastures covered with many rhododendron trees.

While Indian tourists are allowed to visit the lake, foreigners need to get a special permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi.

Gangtok Market, MG Road

Gangtok is the capital of the mountainous northern Indian state of Sikkim. Established as a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the 1840s, the city became capital of an independent monarchy after British rule ended, but joined India in 1975.

Today, it remains a Tibetan Buddhist center and a base for hikers organizing permits and transport for treks through Sikkim’s Himalayan mountain ranges.

North Sikkim - Zero Point

North Sikkim Tour : Zero Point

Zero Point at 15,300ft height

Located at a height of 15,300 feet, there is no reason to visit Yumesamdong than for the sheer gorgeousness of its landscape. It has earned the nickname, Zero Point, since it is here that the road comes to a literal end. The Indo-Chinese border is a stone’s throw away from Yumesamdong and tourists are not allowed to go any further beyond this point.

Enjoy the snow at Zero point

Unaware of its bounteous natural beauty, most travellers skip a trip to Yumesamdong to avoid the bumpy ride that leads to this point. However, if you happen to be a snow junkie then look no further. Owing to its high altitude, Yumsesamdong is perennially covered in a blanketed of snow.
